Guest amm_uk Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Hi, I have a 1999 Galaxy, 110 TDi Manual Gearbox. The car has only done 36,000 miles. On a couple of ocassions on the motorway, we have noticed what I can only describe as a low level screaching noise coming from the engine bay. If you press the throttle down, the noise intensifies, and dies down as the throttle is released. There does not seem to be anything wrong with the engine, it does not make any horrid noises at tickover. The noise does go if I put the clutch in, whilst driving. The noise is intermittant, and seems to appear when on motorways. Anyone have any suggestions? I would be most gratefull. Best Regards Andy Quote
Richmond Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Sounds like a belt slipping. I've no idea what belts there are in a diesel. The link to declutching is a bit odd; perhaps it something to do with the engine being under load. Either that or the guinea pig is trapped in the engine bay. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Either that or the guinea pig is trapped in the engine bay. Back to the "flying biplane" thread? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 When you say a screaching noise is it when the engine is under load, accelerating hard? It could be a leak on the post-turbo air piping. Or your clutch release bearing spinning, with the noise going when you put the clutch in. Or it could be your input shaft bearings, but they would make a noise even at idle, but perhaps less noticable. Noises are soooo hard to diagnose without being there. As for the fact it seems only on the motorway, I think it is more like you only notice it on the motorway. Quote
AMacdonald Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I had a quiet squeal from my TDi for a long time and never bothered about it. At the next service the garage told me they'd found and fixed a small oil leak from the turbo. The squeal never came back. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I have a small turbo sounding squeal under acceleration! And a hot oil smell after any enthusiastic driving! I will have a look at the turbo oil pipe unions. But I never connected it, just thought it was normal turbo noise as this is the first TDi I have owned. Quote
